GTWC Sprint Cup: Bastian Buus targets championship lead at Magny-Cours

The Danish Porsche factory driver is looking to extend his streak of top results as he and Lionspeed GP kick off the second half of the GT World Challenge Sprint Cup in France.

The busy summer continues for Bastian Buus, who this coming weekend returns with Lionspeed GP alongside teammate Bashar Mardini for the third round of the GT World Challenge Sprint Cup for Bronze Cup teams – the penultimate round of the season – at France’s Magny-Cours.

The Danish-Canadian duo, sharing a Porsche 911 GT3 R, currently holds second place in the championship after a strong season that began with an overall pole position and a class victory in the season opener at Zandvoort. This was followed up by another podium at Misano two weeks ago – and this weekend Buus and Mardini are aiming to keep the momentum alive.

“We’re six points behind the championship leaders, so the task is really just to maintain the pace from the previous weekends and deliver some consistent races. Of course, the goal is to win, but in general it’s about taking as many points from our rivals as possible. We need to defend our position in the class and, ideally, take over the lead by the end of the weekend,” said Bastian Buus.

The factory-contracted Danish driver has been assigned to help the German Porsche team fight for a championship in this year’s edition of the GT World Challenge Sprint Cup, which consists of four rounds, each featuring two 60-minute sprint races.

“It’s a fantastic championship where it’s more about outright pace than tactics. A great add-on to the endurance races that make up the majority of my program,” Buus explained.

The seventh round of the GT World Challenge Europe – and the third round of the Sprint Cup for Bronze teams – takes place on Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3, with race starts at 20:45 and 15:00 respectively. Both races will be streamed live on YouTube.
