43 tonnes of fruit waste has so far been saved by Greenfood and the juice company Rescued

Greenfood and the fruit recyclers, Rscued, continue their fruitful collaboration. So far in 2022, 43 tons of apple cores have been saved and turned into approximately 30,000 litres of apple juice. A collaboration that counteracts food waste by turning fruit scraps that were previously thrown away into juices and smoothies.

Since 2019, the food group Greenfood's subsidiary Salico, and the fruit recyclers, Rscued, have collaborated to reduce food waste. This is achieved by making juice from fruit waste that would otherwise be thrown away; apple cores are transformed with the help of Rscued into juices and smoothies which are then sold in stores.

“In order to reach our goals and reduce food waste by 45 percent by 2030, circular food use and industry collaboration are needed. These are two of our most important ways to reduce food waste. We identify food residues that are at risk of being thrown away and use them in other ways, in our own production or in collaboration with others such as Rscued,” said Lisa Isakson, Head of Sustainability at Greenfood.

Approximately 30% of all food produced globally is thrown away. It is a huge waste of resources and it has a direct impact on the environment and the climate, because the production of food accounts for a quarter of global greenhouse emissions.

In order to reduce food waste, cooperation between different industry players is required. And that's where companies like Rscued come in. They reduce food waste by using other actors' leftover food, producing juices from fruit scraps that wholesalers and importers, for various reasons, cannot sell or use.

“Juice production is not the only collaboration between Greenfood and Rscued. We also break down inedible food waste and turn it into nutritious potting soil that Rscued sells for growing plants. From 1000 kg of inedible food waste, we create 100 kg of nutritious compost in a fantastic new recycling initiative,” Lisa Isakson added.
