Edtech UNIwise partners with Monterro to accelerate international expansion

Press release -

Danish edtech company UNIwise partners with Monterro to accelerate the digitalization of higher education across Europe.

Leading Nordic B2B software growth investor Monterro has acquired a majority stake in UNIwise, a Danish SaaS company that helps universities and higher education deliver secure, accessible and efficient digital assessments and exams. The partnership will enable UNIwise to accelerate the product development of its cloud-based platform, WISEflow, and further accelerate international growth.

”Universities and higher education are very interesting segments in the early stages of its digital transformation, and UNIwise has great potential to become a market leader in the digital assessment niche.” says Leif Bohlin, Managing Director at Monterro, who will serve as Chairman of the Board of UNIwise. ”The company has a modern tech platform, solid profitable growth, and very satisfied customers. We’re looking forward to partnering up with the founders and the wider team at UNIwise to accelerate the development of the company.”

UNIwise helps create, manage and deliver digital exams and assessments.

UNIwise’s founders first worked together as part of a cross-institution development project at a Danish university aimed at digitizing assessment creation and workflow for students, assessors and administrators. The project was a success, and the founders, who had extensive experience in both teaching and administration within higher education, decided to form their own company and acquire the proof-of-concept software that had been produced. With that, UNIwise was created in August 2012

After years of continuing and increasing development, the platform – WISEflow – is today trusted and used widely throughout the Nordics, the UK, Germany and other parts of Europe by well over 100 institutions, including Aarhus University, University College London, BI Norwegian Business School and The Open University.

The scalable, easy-to-use platform is designed to support and handle the full workflow of assessment across a wide range of formative and summative assessment types, including API integration to student registry systems. WISEflow enables the digital transformation of the assessment and feedback cycle for students, test writers, assessors and administrators, and in doing so, provides efficiency gains, transparency and traceability, and a predictable, reliable user experience.

UNIwise is now ready to accelerate its growth.

“We connected with Monterro some time ago, as we started thinking about finding a partner to help us grow and enable us to expand our support for European higher education institutions. They have an unparalleled track record of supporting the growth of Nordic software companies in similar phases, and we also quickly struck a chord with their team. We are thrilled about this partnership, and now look forward to digging in together to win the European market.” says Steffen Skovfoged, co-founder and co-CEO of UNIwise. “We are customer driven and experts in our field,” says Rasmus Blok, also co-founder and co-CEO, “and with Monterro, we now have access to an organization with the technical, commercial and strategic experience and competence to take UNIWise, and the support we offer to higher education, to the next level. We’re looking forward to serving many new and happy customers.”

Monterro supports with strategic and operational knowledge

Since 2012, Monterro has supported the growth and development of several SaaS companies, such as Lime, TimeEdit, Matilda FoodTech, Outpost24, Hypergene and Lumera.

“We offer something different. Our expertise in strategic and operational support to Nordic software companies, combined with our experience in product-driven and geographic expansion of SaaS companies, is unique and it is proven.” says Leif Bohlin. “The UNIwise team has built something quite special, and we now join forces to unlock the next growth stage.”

Monterro has acquired a majority stake in UNIwise, and the founders continue as executive leaders and minority owners.
