In spring and summer 2024, Nationalmuseum will be hosting an exhibition on Harriet Backer who was one of Norway’s most influential artists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Backer was one of the most prominent colourists in Scandinavia and portrayers of light and atmosphere in interiors.
Nationalmuseum and The Morgan Library & Museum collaborates in the exhibition Treasures from Nationalmuseum of Sweden opening February 3. More than 75 masterpieces from the collection of Swedish count Carl Gustaf Tessin, now owned by Nationalmuseum, are brought to New York for a rare visit. The show includes works by artists such as Dürer, Raphael, Rubens, Rembrandt, Watteau and Boucher.
During Stockholm Design Week 2017, an exhibition by and about Finnish interior designer Eero Aarnio will open at Nationalmuseum Design. Aarnio is one of the best-known figures internationally in the history of modern Finnish design. He made his name in the 1960s with his experimental designs and his futuristic reinforced plastic chairs.
Nationalmuseum and the Louvre makes an exhibition about the Swedish count Carl Gustaf Tessin, opening in Paris 20 October. It comprises an exclusive selection of 120 paintings and drawings from Tessin’s own art collection, now owned by Nationalmuseum, that documents how artistic styles and tastes evolved in Paris at the height of the Rococo period.
Light and stillness – Scandinavian art at the turn of the 20th century opens on Saturday 24 September at the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi. The exhibition comprises some of the best examples of Scandinavian painting from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, all on loan from Nationalmuseum.

On Friday 3 June, Ingegerd Råman opens at Nationalmuseum Design. In this exhibition, one of Sweden’s most influential designers presents a personal selection of the projects and commissions she has worked on, with commentary in the form of sketches, videos and captions. The exhibition is coproduced with Vandalorum in Värnamo, where it will go on show this autumn.
Continuing its programming on the theme of art jewellery, Nationalmuseum is presenting an exhibition titled The Jeweller’s Art at Läckö Castle this summer. On show will be some 300 pieces – tiaras, necklaces, brooches, snuff boxes, pocket watches and miniature portraits – dating from 1650 to the present day. The materials range from gold, pearls and diamonds to plastic, eggshell and perch skin.
Nationalmuseum, Moderna Museet and Konstakademien are showcasing the strengths of their respective collections by bringing together works from different eras in a co-produced exhibition titled The Artist. On show will be close to 100 works by some of the biggest names in art history, from Rubens and Rembrandt via Renoir and Picasso to Cindy Sherman.

This autumn, Nationalmuseum presents a major exhibition about the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, co-produced with the Musée Rodin, Paris, and the Ateneum Art Museum, Helsinki. Many of Rodin’s works have achieved iconic status. The Thinker is one of the world’s best-known sculptures.
