New import warehouse at the port
The 24,000 m2 warehousing and distribution centre at Arendal, located directly beside the port, is now complete. Owned by the Port of Gothenburg, the warehouse has been leased to Schenker Logistics and will handle mainly imported goods scheduled for onward distribution to end-consumers throughout Sweden.
Mats Olsson, President of Schenker Logistics, says: "We can see major benefits from integrating this warehousing solution with the port as many of our import customers have substantial quayside volumes. It will be both practical and good for the environment."
SEK 150 million investment
Construction took place throughout 2013 and was made possible thanks to a SEK 150 million investment by the Port of Gothenburg. The project was a collaborative venture involving the Port of Gothenburg, Schenker Logistics and NCC Construction.
Mats Olsson continues: "This collaboration was very positive and was characterised by mutual understanding and fruitful discussions. The improved infrastructure, including the Ytterhamnsmotet junction and new road construction, was also a key factor behind choosing this particular solution."
Increased volumes at the Port of Gothenburg
The new warehousing and distribution centre will result in higher volumes for the Port of Gothenburg. The terminal can handle 5,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) each year, a large proportion of which are completely new volumes for the port. Around 900,000 containers will be shipped via the Port of Gothenburg in 2013.
Magnus Kårestedt, Port of Gothenburg Chief Executive, feels that construction of the warehousing and distribution centre will consolidate the Port of Gothenburg as a freight hub. "We are extremely pleased that Schenker Logistics, one of the biggest players in the logistics and transport sector, has opted to establish operations here. It will reinforce our position as the port that serves the whole of Sweden."
