Radonova´s Radtrak2 detectors receive excellent results in a Spanish radon intercomparison test

Radonova and ACPRO, one of Radonova´s distributors in Spain, have taken part in an intercomparison exercise with passive radon detectors. The Radtrak2 detectors used in the test got very good results when comparing to other detectors.

ACPRO SLU has been authorized as a Technical Unit in Radiological Protection (UTPR) since 1990. The national intercomparison test was organized by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, in collaboration with the Spanish Radiation Safety Authority (CSN).

For the intercomparison test, at least five detectors of the same type were exposed from each laboratory. The detectors were exposed to radon concentrations (ca. 300 and 1000 Bq/m3) for 3 months. Only 5 of the 10 participants obtained satisfactory results for all the exposures undertaken – illustrating the high-performance levels of Radonova’s Radtrak2 radon detectors.

Due to new regulations and guidance from the Spanish Radiation Safety Authority and the recent update of the Spanish Technical Building Code, there has been an increase in demand for radon concentration measurements in residential homes and workplaces. Nevertheless, further work still needs to be done in Spain, such as the implementation of the European Directive 59/2013 which is still pending national approval.

  • A calibrated instrument will provide reliable radon measurements

Why calibration is fundamental to obtaining accurate radon measurements

In many countries, there is a requirement that a radon instrument should be calibrated once a year. This is important as many instruments lack the functionality to determine whether it is providing accurate results and working correctly.
    Why calibrate?
Radon is a radioactive gas that is formed naturally when the uranium-238 isotope decomposes. The radon gas decays and turns into radon daug

We are at the beginning of the radon measurement season in most European countries, so we thought it would be helpful to provide some tips on how to reduce the risk of remeasurement. Should I be worried about temporarily high radon levels?

Radon levels in a house can vary considerably over 24 hours, and will be different depending on the day you take the measurement. However, if you consider the possibility of being exposed to elevated radon levels over a 10 to 20 year period, then the risk of developing lung cancer increases. Therefore, don’t worry about temporarily elevated radon levels just being above the limit value of 2

What type of units are used to measure radon gas?

It seems a simple question, but in reality the answer is not so straightforward. Firstly, we need to clarify exactly what we are talking about when it comes to radon gas. There are various aspects to radon: radon gas exposure, radon gas concentration in indoor air, radon gas concentration in soil, radon in water, radon exhalation, radon doses, etc. Depending on which aspect or level we need to mea
