Both Funifor cable cars have been operating between Birg and Schilthorn since 2nd April 2026

Press release -

A significant milestone at the Schilthorn: the final new cable car in the overall project has commenced operations!

On 2ndApril 2026, the final cable car in the SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project came into service between Birg and the Schilthorn. Around 200 guests attended the midday celebrations at the Schilthorn. Schilthorn Cableway Ltd. used this special occasion to launch its new brand identity at the same time.

Intensive construction work has been underway between Stechelberg and the Schilthorn for the last three years – and now the final milestone has been reached: the second and final cable car line between Birg and the Schilthorn was officially opened in the presence of around 200 invited guests, including the Federal Councillor and Minister of Transport Albert Rösti. In addition to the world’s steepest cable car to Mürren, which opened back in December 2024, all four Funifor cable cars on the Mürren-Birg-Schilthorn route are now in operation.

“A new era is beginning!” says Johannes Stöckli, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Schilthorn Cableway Ltd., with delight. “The completion of the final cable car is a historic moment for the Schilthorn Cableway Ltd. The fact that we were able to complete this major project on schedule is no mean feat. This makes us even more delighted with what we have achieved and the efforts of everyone involved.”

Director Christoph Egger is also delighted: “Today is a day of great celebration, but also relief. After several years of intensive construction work, we are proud to have successfully completed this significant project. Johannes Stöckli and I would like to thank everyone involved who, through their dedication and perseverance, have contributed to this milestone.”

New stations with architectural highlights

It is not just the cable cars that are new, but also the associated stations in Stechelberg, Mürren, Birg and on the Schilthorn. The light-coloured copper façades of the finger docks are a defining feature, creating a consistent, distinctive style across all stations. Equally impressive is the exposed cable car technology with its magenta-coloured wheels. It draws on elements of the old Gimmelwald cable car station, whose technical design was considered particularly innovative in the 1960s. Inside the stations, the extensive use of wood and generous window fronts creates a bright atmosphere and unobstructed views of the unique natural surroundings.

Further development projects at the stations

Whilst the cable car installation work has been completed, further development projects will be carried out at the stations over the coming months. In Mürren for example, a new sports shop with an integrated bar is being built on the arrival and departure level of the new cable cars, it is due to open by June.

New cable car, new brand identity

The Schilthorn Cableway is marking the completion of the construction work with the launch of a new brand identity. At the heart of this are the “Legendary Moments” – those special experiences that guests can enjoy on the Schilthorn. Working closely with the Bern-based agency Stämpfli KommuniKation, the company has developed a refined brand identity. The change is particularly evident in the visual identity: the established brand colour, magenta, is complemented by a warm shade of red. The ‘Schilthorn-Piz Gloria’ wordmark is now accompanied by a figurative mark – the ‘Peak’, an abstract ‘S’ in the shape of a mountain. The new typeface also reflects the angular topography of the Schilthorn region. The visual language is inspired by the dynamic and often rapidly changing weather conditions.

The new design is now being rolled out gradually in day-to-day operations. The rebranding will be completed with the introduction of the new staff uniforms at the start of the 2026/27 winter season.
