Press release -

Excellent summer season at the Schilthorn

The Schilthorn Cableway Ltd. can look back on an excellent summer season 2025. Demand has risen sharply since the reopening of the Schilthorn summit with the new Funifor cable car in mid-March. However, the ongoing construction work for the SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project has once again placed heavy demands on the company.

The winter season began on 1st November at the Schilthorn, but it is still worth taking a look back at the summer: since the opening of the first track of the new Funifor cable car between Birg and Schilthorn in mid-March 2025, demand has remained strong. Frequencies and visitor numbers during the summer season exceeded the very high figures for the previous year and thus also significantly exceeded the peak values of 2018 and 2019. From May to September 2025, 1'910'962 guest trips were counted: 18.4 per cent more than in the previous year.

For the first time, holidaymakers were able to visit the Schilthorn and Allmendhubel with the Bernese Oberland Pass, which was used extensively. The good, if not glorious, summer weather and the sometimes intense heat also attracted guests to the mountains. Demand from the USA remains exceptionally high. Visitor numbers from Southeast Asian countries and China are also encouraging.

Maximum value on the Allmendhubel

But it was not just the Schilthorn that attracted visitors; Mürren's smaller local mountain, the Allmendhubel, was also very popular. Visitor numbers reached an all-time high, which was directly reflected in the turnover of the Panorama Restaurant Allmendhubel. This increased again by over 11 per cent.

Shop businesses have recovered

With the reopening of the Schilthorn summit, the Shops business unit was also able to return to pre-pandemic peak levels for the first time. The expansion of the sales area made possible by the construction of the new station was directly reflected in an increase in sales of just under 20 per cent.

Summer 2025 – last summer with major construction work

2025 was the last summer in which intensive construction work took place at the Mürren, Birg and Schilthorn stations. This was fortunate, as the disruption caused to visitors was particularly severe on the Schilthorn. Nevertheless, the construction work on the new, attractive buildings was mainly viewed with admiration and interest. This interest in the construction is also reflected in the consistently well-booked site tours. A total of over 5,000 guests have been guided through the construction sites since work began. Just in time for the peak winter season at the end of November, the second track between Mürren and Birg will open, reaching a maximum capacity of 800 people per hour. Finally, at the beginning of April 2026, the second Funifor cable car between Birg and Schilthorn will go into operation, completing the last major construction phase.
