Pharem and AstraZeneca joins forces to find sustainable treatment solutions

Pharem, a Greentech frontrunner in enzyme-based water treatment solutions, has joined forces with the global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to develop sustainable water treatment solutions. Using Pharem's platform Zymatic, the companies target one or several waste streams from API manufacturing to find new ways of treatment using enzymes.

Pharem and AstraZeneca use enzymes to target and treat unwanted organic compounds in wastewater. Enzymes are naturally occurring catalysts; they are non-toxic biological molecules and can target almost any organic compound in various ways without the need to add energy. Using enzymes for waste treatment has often been considered complex and expensive, but using Pharem's platform technology, Zymatic, an affordable and efficient way of facilitating enzymes for wastewater treatment, has been enabled.

AstraZeneca was selected as the winner in the Leading Cities AcceliGOV program, which allows for a deeper collaboration together with Pharem. As a first project, the companies will select and target one or several manufacturing streams and find sustainable solutions for water treatment.

"We are committed to constantly exploring and improving our sustainable ways of working, including waste management of active pharmaceutical ingredients. This opportunity provided by Leading Cities to engage in strong collaboration with Pharem will be another important step on our sustainable journey at AstraZeneca", said Nina Andrén, Head of AstraZeneca's campus in Södertälje

The project will initially focus on the site in Södertälje, Sweden, which is the biggest manufacturing site within AstraZeneca. Dependent on the scope, other streams could be included and targeted for treatment with enzyme-based solutions.

"We are excited to start collaborating with AstraZeneca", said Christian Ryen, COO of Pharem. "They have a clear sustainability focus within wastewater treatment, and with Zymatic, we have finally made enzyme catalysis available for wastewater treatment in a cost-efficient way."

The preparation for the project has already started and will be initiated later this year. The project begins with selecting the enzymes to be used in a Zymatic solution for demo/piloting.

About Pharem/Zymatic

Pharem is a cleantech company with an advanced biotech division. Using a combination of various technology areas, they have developed Zymatic, an enzyme-based treatment technology which offers treatment of organic micropollutants. It can be tailored to fit broader treatment requirements for municipal wastewater treatment plants and more specific treatment for industrial processes.

Pharem was the 2021 QBE AcceliCITY Resilience Challenge Champion. Selected from over 500 innovative solutions sourced globally, Pharem demonstrated the innovation and leadership to transform the future of water treatment in the world's cities.

About Leading Cities

Leading Cities is a Boston-based global non-profit founded by Dublin, Boston, Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro, Lyon, Hamburg, Lisbon, Zapopan, Vancouver, and Haifa. It was built on the philosophy that cities, which for the first time represent most of the world's population, are essential to overcome our great challenges—climate change, human equity, and technology development. Originally established in 2008 at Northeastern University, it later spun off as an independent organisation expanding beyond research to advance government sustainability and resiliency. Since then, Leading Cities has evolved to provide a wider range of services for governments, start-ups, and corporations. To connect its global networks, LaunchPad 11 was launched as the first metaverse ecosystem for Smart & Resilient City innovators by clustering entrepreneurs, investors, and decision-makers. Its signature program, the QBE AcceliCITY Resilience Challenge, is considered one of the Top 5 Govtech accelerators in the world.
