Pharem awarded 400 kEUR funding from Swedish Energy Agency

The EU will soon decide on new Urban Wastewater Treatment Directives (UWWTD), which includes directives that regards treatment of Micropollutants at municipal WWTPs. Moving forward, the goal is also for all municipal WWTPs to strive for energy neutrality. By selecting treatment technologies that are energy efficient, the WWTPs can invest to reach this goal with a more sustainable footprint than before.

Pharem have been awarded funding from the Swedish Energy Agency to demonstrate that treatment of Micropollutants in wastewater treatment plants can be done with low energy consumption. By facilitating enzymes, natural catalysts, Zymatic offers cost efficient and sustainable treatment that meets the coming EU directive and its performance requirements.

“To reach net-neutrality, we must look beyond energy-production and storage. Wherever possible, we should look at more energy-efficient solutions.” Martin Ryen Says, CEO of Pharem. ”Very large volumes of water are processed through municipal WWTPs every day and applying treatment steps to these facilities should be as energy efficient as possible. Fighting pollution with sustainable treatment solutions is Pharem´s core business and I am pleased to see that low-energy water treatment gets acknowledged”.

The project will install and operate Zymatic URBAN in one selected WWTP where energy consumption will be measured, and its treatment performance will be analysed. The installation and start of operation is planned for Q2 2024.

Zymatic URBAN is a standardized treatment solution specifically developed for URBAN (or municipal) wastewater treatment plants. It uses a mixture of enzymes designed to be broad and target many problematic Micropollutants. By immobilizing the enzymes to a sand-like material, the so called Zymatic Sand can be used in the same equipment normally used for sand-filtration or other MMF. This allows for low investment costs, short start-up time and simple operations.

About Pharem

Pharem is a cleantech company with an advanced biotech division. By using a combination of different technology areas an enzyme-based water treatment technology has been developed, Zymatic, that offers treatment of organic pollutants. Zymatic are tailored to fit the broader treatment requirements for municipal wastewater treatment plants as well as the more specific treatment for required for industrial process wastewater.

About Swedish Energy Agency

The Swedish Energy Agency is a government agency responsible for matters of the supply and use of energy in Sweden. The Agency is in many aspects leading Sweden's transition to a sustainable energy system. The organisation is regulated by the Government through the instruction and annual appropriations directives.
