Pharem selected to join the InnoWise Scale project by The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT)

Pharem have, with its water treatment brand Zymatic, been selected as one of only 20 SMEs to join the InnoWise Scale project. The joint project objective is to find innovative solutions for various water scarcity challenges in Southern Europe.

The objective is to reclaim water for agriculture purposes to secure water balance in a coastal natural park. The project recently started and will continue its planning phase to the end of the year. During the project, Pharem will be working with other EU-based companies to find solutions to a real-time problem located in Italy. The solutions will be demonstrated in 2022.

Pharem has developed Zymatic, an enzyme-based water treatment technology that can be applied on municipal wastewater treatment plants, industrial processes, or other water environments to treat unwanted organic compounds. The combination of enzymes, material and enzyme immobilisation techniques provides a flexible approach for applying a wide range of treatment mechanisms for the treatment of organic micropollutants (such as pharmaceutical residues, pesticides, plastic chemicals etc.). Using the Zymatic platform, you can apply a wide range of enzymes to the treatment step, and this offers unique adaptability to local needs. This presents a green and necessary solution for many water challenges.

“We are thrilled to have been selected by the EIT to join the project. This acknowledges the hard work our team have put into commercialising our Zymatic technology. Using greener and more sustainable technologies to solve challenges caused by organic compounds is necessary for the future of the water industry. Enzyme-based tech has taken a leap the last 10 years, and we see great synergies and potential in the already existing water treatment industry.” Said Martin Ryen, CEO and Founder of Pharem.

The EIT is an integral part of Horizon Europe, the EU’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation

What does the EIT do?

EIT supports the development of dynamic, long-term European partnerships among leading companies, research labs and higher education. These partnerships are called EIT Knowledge and Innovation Communities. Each is dedicated to finding solutions to a specific global challenge, from climate change and sustainable energy to healthy living and food.

Bringing together more than 2000 partners, the EIT is Europe’s largest innovation ecosystem and connects innovators and organisations. We power innovators and entrepreneurs across the EU and beyond to turn their best ideas into cutting-edge products and services. This is crucial to fulfilling the EIT’s mission to create jobs and deliver sustainable and smart growth for Europe.

Together with leading partners, the EIT Community offers a wide range of innovation and entrepreneurship activities: education courses that combine technical and entrepreneurial skills, tailored business creation and acceleration services and innovation-driven research projects. This brings new ideas and solutions to the market, turns students into entrepreneurs and, most importantly, delivers innovation.
