Are Meal Replacement Shakes Good For Weight Loss?

Meal replacement shakes do sound like the magic bullet for many weight watchers. They are relatively cheap with often no preparation required and taste decent enough. What’s not to like, right?

Modern Convenience

Hands down, they are convenient, which goes a long way given our current busy lifestyle where skipping meals and overeating is the norm. In addition, meal replacement shakes are easily packed within reach. It cuts down on waiting time in the food queue and provides the solution to the proverbial question of “what to eat today?”

Nutrition Value

Generally, meal replacement shakes contain the nutrients you need in a complete meal, but the argument against that is still ongoing. Some nutritionists suggest that every meal replacement shake consumed should still be supplemented with a low-calorie snack like a small fruit salad. This is to ensure that the body gets nutrition in the form of antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals that it needs.

Weight Loss Factor

Weight loss is essentially about calorie reduction. A low-calorie diet, however, can lead to frequent hunger pangs. A meal replacement shake does fill you up, but a liquid diet-only lifestyle isn’t a healthy way to lose weight, is it? Your body still needs nutrients such as antioxidants and others to stay healthy especially when losing weight.

Additionally, a meal replacement is just that – a convenience. They don’t actually teach you how to prepare a healthy meal, so chances are, they don’t necessarily replace bad habits.

True Weight Loss

Weight loss involves more than just gulping down a meal replacement shake. It involves adopting a healthy lifestyle that extends beyond meal times. You can substitute one or two of your daily meals with a meal replacement shake. They do work, but only if accompanied by a healthy lifestyle change.

Understand what your body needs and reduce or eliminate what it can do without for whatever your goals are.
