Last year Hurtigruten’s hybrid Roald Amundsen was completed and became the first cruise ship able to operate on battery power. Now her sister vessel MS Fritjof Nansen has set sail and is currently on an inauguration tour around northern Europe. She departs on her maiden voyage, from Hamburg to the Norwegian fjords, on April 1st.
The new Hurtigruten hybrid MS Roald Amundsen has set sail for the artic and is becoming the first cruise ship able to operate on battery power. When using her battery packs, it enables her to move silently through sensitive wild life areas without a trace!
Tillberg Design of Sweden designs all of Hurtigrutens new Rolls Royce expedition ships. Hurtigruten has named its two new expedition ships after the Norwegian polar pioneers, MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen. These will be the first ships in the world that use all-electric hybrid technology.
The complete makeover of four out of five coastal ships for Hurtigruten are soon finished. Ms Kong Harald, MS Polarlys, MS Nordkapp, MS Spitsbergen are now delivered and Nordnorge will come later this year.
