Press release -

Fresh milk drink for lactose intolerant sufferers

Up to 15 per cent of the UK can now enjoy the taste of fresh cows milk thanks to Lactofree, the latest launch by Arla Foods.

A UK first, Lactofree has the same taste of fresh milk, but without any of the sugars and enzymes which usually cause feelings of nausea, bloating, flatulence, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.

Lactofree is processed from fresh cows milk but undergoes a gentler filtration process to remove over 99.95 per cent of lactose. Arla has invested over £800,000 in specialist equipment to ensure that the filtration process does not affect the nutritional content of Lactofree.

Research, conducted by Lactofree and the Milk Development Council, shows that only 6 per cent of the population believe themselves to be lactose intolerant, yet 22 per cent of people surveyed reported unpleasant symptoms after consuming milk products.

The research also indicated that many people choose to eliminate dairy products from their diets altogether, cutting out essential calcium and other nutrients. Results from the research highlights that this is the case for over 54 per cent people suffering from lactose intolerance.

Arun Prabhu, ideations project manager, Arla Foods said: "Lactose intolerant sufferers will no longer have to compromise on the food and drink that they consume. With Lactofree's lack of lactose all the goodness and taste of semi-skimmed milk remain."

Consultant gastroenterologist Dr John Mayberry, commented: "Lactose intolerance is a widespread yet poorly understood condition. Many patients often treat Lactose Intolerance as Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS), however IBS treatments often contain lactose which only exacerbates the problem. It's important to increase both healthcare professionals understanding of the condition and the public's knowledge that in the majority of cases, lactose intolerance is a condition that people can manage themselves."

Lactofree is now available in one-litre cartons at all major retailers.
