Watch: The Yummy Fur “In the Company of Women”
Today we catch up with the ’90s-era Scottish cult band favs The Yummy Fur with the video for the track “In the Company of Women” from their 2019 ‘best of’ compilation Piggy Wings (Rock Action Records). Hailing from Glasgow and fronted by singer/guitarist John McKeown, who would go on to form the group 1990s after the Fur’s demise, the band also included future Franz Ferdinand members drummer Paul Thomson and floating participant Alex Kapranos.
After their inception in 1992, The Yummy Fur proceeded to release a handful of 7″s including their 1997 cult classic “Policeman.” Additionally, the band put out three LPs, Night Club (1996), Male Shadow at Three O’Clock (1998), and Sexy World (1999), while making two appearances on John Peel’s radio show, as well as being regularly featured on the program. In case Mr. Peel’s admiration wasn’t enough, The Gossip’s Beth Patterson and Nathan Howdeshell explain:
“We didn’t just like them, we adored them & obsessively collected anything that had to do with them. They were a beautiful mystery to us in America. Who were these strange weirdos that sang about Lydia Lunch and wrote these 2-minute post-punk masterpieces? Yes, the Yummy Fur were the greatest British group in our humble opinions.”
Piggy Wings compiles some of the band’s best 7″ and album tracks for an excellent revisit into the group’s infectious brand of sardonic dance-punk. “In the Company of Women” is off of Sexy World, and it is an excellent example of their incisive wit and punked-up Blues attack. Unfortunately, The Yummy Fur’s 2020 reunion tour had to be put on hold due to the virus outbreak, but we can still hold out hope the band will make it back to the US in 2021!
