Hövding’s new Myr, Lav and Strand covers echo the colours of the Swedish landscape

The new spring covers for Hövding’s airbag for cyclists feature natural block colours – olive, beige and grey – and a classic outdoor fabric from British Millerain. Operating since 1880, this textile mill is famed for the quality of its hard-wearing waxed cotton fabrics, which are used to great effect by leading brands such as Barbour and Belstaff.

“The idea was to design three covers in light, neutral shades, in a truly premium-quality fabric. We don’t want our cyclists to be limited in their clothing choices when they cycle off to work in the morning. The cover should be seen as the base for the rest of the outfit,” says Stina Malmros, Pattern Technician at Hövding.

Myr, Strand and Lav are made from a double-faced cotton twill laminate with a water-resistant finish. The inside is designed for luxurious comfort, covering the zip for a soft feel on the neck. The fabric touching the neck is able to wick away perspiration if the cycle trip gets a bit more active, and the new cover is edged with a black reflective strip to make the cyclist more visible on dark roads.

Hövding is a discreet collar that the cyclist wears around their neck, where it checks the cyclist’s movements 200 times a second. The collar contains an airbag that instantly inflates in an accident to protect your head and neck. The deployment mechanism is controlled using sensors that detect the abnormal movement of the cyclist.

Recommended retail price for the Myr, Strand and Lav covers:

EUR 40

Hövding - Airbag for cyclists

Hövding started out in 2005 as a master’s thesis by the two founders Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, who, at the time, were studying Industrial Design at the University of Lund.

The project resulted in the concept of an airbag helmet, which won Innovationsbron’s Ideas Grant. This kick-started the process of developing Hövding into a real product. In 2006 Hövding won the Venture Cup, after which Hövding Sweden AB was founded.

Over the years Hövding has grown from just two people with a great idea, to a NASDAQ-listed company that handle everything from development and production to marketing and sales. Today Hövding consists of a team of around 30 people, all triggered by the word impossible, and Hövding’s airbag for cyclists is available in 16 markets across Europe.

The headquarters are located in an old chocolate factory in Malmö – the sixth greatest cycling city in the world. Final assembly of Hövding is carried out in association with the Japanese Company Nihon Plast.
