  • WORLD-WIDE CALL FOR 'THE RIGHT TO STUTTER'

    STAMMA has signed a declaration alongside 72 other organisations around the world calling for the right to stutter. International Stammering Awareness Day is usually filled with stories of 'overcoming' one's stammer. This year STAMMA and other countries around the world are calling for the right to stammer to be recognised, accepted and space made for people to talk in the way that they do.

  • 25,000 PETITION TO BE DELIVERED TO BBC AND ITV 22ND OCTOBER

    Less than half the population can name a character in TV or film who stammers; of those that were able to name someone, most entered either King George VI (The King's Speech) or Arkwright from Open All Hours. This is an indictment of media representation of people who stammer.

    To mark the start of the the international conference STAMMAFest Global in Liverpool 24-28th August, STAMMA have launched a series of hard-hitting billboard adverts in Liverpool, showing people mid-stammer, with the words, 'Nothing to see here, I just have a stammer.'

  • GLOBAL CONFERENCE FOR PEOPLE WHO STAMMER A SELL OUT

    Ticketing has now closed for STAMMAFest Global, with over 300 delegates expected to attend. Among the discussions taking place will be 'Is there beauty in stammering?', creating change (tackling discrimination) through litigation, and how to encourage employers to create a better working environment. Speakers include Actor and podcaster Scroobius Pip and poet Owen Sheers.

  • INTERNATIONAL STAMMERING CONFERENCE LIVERPOOL 24th-28th August: “STAMMAFest Global”

    STAMMA are holding an international stammering conference at Liverpool University, 24-28 August. A 5-day extravaganza which incorporates STAMMA’s biennial conference and the International Stuttering Association’s (ISA) World Congress. Speakers include actor and podcaster Scroobius Pip, author Hannah Tovey, Poet Owen Sheers and activist Patrick Campbell.

  • Conference for Parents & Children who stammer, 27th August, Liverpool University

    Help us to promote free places for children and parents who are Speech and Language Therapy clients living in Liverpool or Sefton. This one day conference aims to give children and teenagers who stammer a chance to connect with others and provide a space for parents of young people who stammer to share their experiences.

  • A Global Love Letter to the TV & Film Industry

    STAMMA, The British Stammering Association, is urging broadcasters, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV and the BBC, to include people who stammer on the small and silver screen in a love letter on social media, supported by organisations around the world representing those who stammer/stutter.

  • How Many Adults Stammer?

    STAMMA has been working with J. Scott Yaruss (Professor in Communicative Sciences and Disorders) and his team at Michigan State University on YouGov Polling to ascertain how many people believe they have a stammer. Their latest 2021 polling suggests a figure of 2%.

    STAMMAFest Global, combining STAMMA's bienniel conference and the International Stuttering Association World Congress is now taking submissions for their conference in Liverpool, 24-28 August 2022.

    STAMMA is disappointed in the judgement in this case. Many people who stammer use avoidance techniques to hide or manage their stammer to the point that when they say that they stammer, struggle to talk, they are disbelieved. Future litigants need to demonstrate that the stammer has a significantly adverse on their life and we'd urge them to bring in professional expertise to help them prepare.
