Four new Master’s programmes at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU

SLU, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, is moving its education forward with the strategic development of four new two year Master’s programmes: Horticultural science, Plant biology for Sustainable Production, Landscape Architecture for Sustainable Urbanisation and Sustainable Food Systems.

With a programme start during the autumn semester 2018, these four are the first Master’s programmes created according to the university’s intention of prioritizing education development within the subject areas of:

  • Production, plant biology, horticulture, aquaculture
  • Management of natural resources from the perspective of both social and natural sciences
  • Food Systems

– The new Master’s programmes focus on several of the major challenges the world is facing, says deputy vice chancellor Karin Holmgren. My vision is that graduates from these programs should be able to contribute to the objectives of Agenda 2030, where we need to produce food and other goods to a growing population while at the same time develop a fossil-free society and create a healthy world for both humans and animals.

Horticultural Science is aimed at giving a holistic view on how it is possible to manage and renew the knowledge about sustainable horticultural cultivation systems. Apart from the Master’s degree in horticultural science, students with the appropriate prerequisites will be able to receive a professional qualification within the subject as well. Landscape Architecture for Sustainable Development addresses, among other things, how the ongoing urbanisation poses major challenges for the development of urban and rural areas, and landscape architecture as a mean to manage those issues. The programme rewards students with a Master’s degree in landscape architecture. Programme homepage: https://www.slu.se/landscape-architecture-for-sustainable-urbanisation.

Plant biology for Sustainable Production utilises the strong research and teaching competence on three SLU campuses in Alnarp, Ultuna and Umeå. The programme is designed to educate the next generation of plant biologists adept at developing biological solutions to problems in agriculture and forestry. This new venture also builds on existing cooperation with Uppsala, Stockholm and Umeå universities, combining a unique array of expertise from some of the strongest plant biology environments in Sweden. The graduates obtain a Master’s degree with a major in biology. https://www.slu.se/plant-biology-for-sustainable-production/

Sustainable Food Systems is a multi-disciplinary Master´s programme. It focuses on sustainable development applied to the life cycle of food, including primary production, processing, distribution and consumption. Programme homepage: https://www.slu.se/sustainable-food-systems.

Information about the new programmes is and will be available as details and course schedules for the programmes is established during the weeks to come.
