Frederik Schandorff Aims for Championship Lead in Virginia
The season is heating up for Frederik Schandorff, who, together with Brendan Iribe, will be aiming to take the lead in the Le Mans-qualifying Bob Akin Championship at the eighth round of the IMSA WeatherTech Championship.
Frederik Schandorff returns to the American IMSA Championship this weekend, with the eighth round taking place at Virginia International Raceway. There is no doubt that the Dane is hoping for redemption after a disastrous race at Road America in the previous round. Schandorff never even made it into the car before his American teammate suffered power steering issues in the team’s Ferrari 296 GT3 and was forced to retire after hitting the wall.
“It was a heavy crash, and while Brendan (Iribe, ed.) thankfully walked away unharmed, it required a brand-new chassis for our car. We’ve already tested the new equipment, and it’s been fantastic, so we’re heading into the weekend with high expectations,” said Frederik Schandorff.
Inception Racing’s main focus is to secure points for the Bob Akin Championship, where they currently share the lead with a rival team. The Bob Akin title is especially important, as it grants an entry for next year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans – the team’s ultimate goal.
“It’s great to be back in Virginia. It’s another one of the old-school circuits on the calendar, where there are naturally no track limits – if you hit the grass, you’re highly likely to hit the wall as well. That means you get extra rewarded for pushing right to the limit,” Schandorff explained.
This weekend’s IMSA round features only the GT field of the championship. Qualifying takes place on August 23 at 4:55 p.m. local time (ET) while the two-hour-and-forty-minute race goes green on Sunday, August 24 at 2:10 p.m.
