Frederik Schandorff forced to retire from IMSA race at Road America

The Danish Ferrari driver never got the chance to take the wheel before Inception Racing was forced to withdraw after an accident caused by technical issues.

Frederik Schandorff, Brendan Iribe, and the rest of the Inception Racing crew were sidelined early from the seventh round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Road America. A technical problem sent the team’s yellow Ferrari into the barriers in the opening stages of the race, bringing an abrupt end to an otherwise promising weekend.

“The most important thing is that Brendan (Iribe) is okay. It was a big crash, but fortunately it was only the car that suffered,” said Frederik Schandorff.

Brendan Iribe started the two-hour and 40-minute IMSA race from ninth place in the GTD class on a circuit where Inception Racing had finished on the podium in each of the past two years. Shortly after the start, however, a technical failure struck the car’s power steering at high speed just before a corner, leaving the American with no chance of keeping control.

“It’s frustrating that technical issues once again take us out of the fight. We retired from the lead at Daytona due to a technical problem, and we also had to withdraw from the race at Laguna Seca. On both occasions we missed out on a lot of points. It’s a shame for the whole team, who once again put in a huge effort to get us ready. But we do as we always do – keep our heads high and focus on the next round,” the Dane added.

The eighth round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship takes place at Virginia International Raceway on August 24.
