Indianapolis hat-trick: Mikkel Jensen takes third LMP2 triumph in a row
Impressive hat-trick for Danish racer as Mikkel Jensen takes third straight LMP2 victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with TDS Racing
Everything went exactly as hoped for Mikkel Jensen and the rest of the TDS Racing crew, who on Sunday evening Danish time secured a class win in one of the highlights of the IMSA Championship – the six-hour race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The iconic racetrack once again hosted an action-packed race with a tense finish, and in the LMP2 category it was – for the third year in a row – Mikkel Jensen who drove the car across the line as the winner.
“It was a really cool race where the whole team delivered at the highest level. Steven (Thomas) started us off by moving from fifth place to second before handing the car over to Hunter (McElrea), who continued the strong pace,” said Mikkel Jensen.
The Dane himself took over the car in third place in LMP2 and was tasked with fighting his way to the front before the checkered flag. Along the way, Jensen even had a tough battle with his Team Peugeot TotalEnergies teammate, Paul Di Resta, who races for a rival LMP2 outfit in the IMSA series.
“I managed to get past, take the lead and open up a good gap. Towards the end of the race there was, as is typical in IMSA races, a yellow flag and a safety car, which completely eliminated our 23-second lead. We got the green flag with only a few minutes left, but fortunately I was able to bring it safely home,” explained the Dane.
“In general, it was a perfect weekend with a really strong effort from the entire team and my teammates. And of course, it’s a huge achievement to take victory at such an iconic track for the third year in a row. Now we just need to do the same at Road Atlanta next month.”
Before Mikkel Jensen and TDS Racing take on the IMSA season finale at Road Atlanta – Petit Le Mans on October 11 – the Dane will be back in action with Team Peugeot TotalEnergies in the seventh round of the FIA World Endurance Championship. That takes place already this coming weekend at Fuji in Japan.
