Mikkel Jensen aiming for third straight Indianapolis victory
After two consecutive wins at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Danish racer is targeting a hat trick as round six of the American LMP2 Championship takes place at the iconic venue this weekend.
Mikkel Jensen, Steven Thomas, and the rest of TDS Racing have endured a mixed IMSA season, with two podium finishes and three results at the lower end of the top 10. But with two rounds remaining, there is still optimism in the camp. Last year, the team secured back-to-back victories in the final two races of the season – and with a provisional fourth place in this year’s championship, there is still a chance of finishing at the very top.
This weekend brings the six-hour contest at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is not only an iconic venue for motorsport fans around the world but also the place where Mikkel Jensen has helped TDS Racing to victory for the past two years.
"This naturally gives us high expectations, not least because we also have a strong car this year and have shown good speed throughout the season. Unfortunately, we have been unlucky, which means we are behind in the points, but that could change dramatically if we manage to win the six-hour race this weekend. It would also be fantastic to make it three in a row and score a hat trick at such an iconic circuit as Indianapolis," said Mikkel Jensen.
Jensen and Thomas will be joined at Indianapolis by the team’s regular third driver, Hunter McElrea, who has also supported the effort at Daytona, Sebring, and Watkins Glen. In total, 12 LMP2 teams will line up for this weekend’s race.
"On top of that, it’s great to be back in the American championship. It’s always a thrill to race in LMP2, where the field is tight and the battles are intense. And with two of the biggest races left to close the season – this weekend at Indianapolis and then Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta next month – there’s definitely a lot to look forward to," the Dane added.
Round six of the IMSA Championship for LMP2 teams got underway Friday afternoon Danish time and continues with practice and qualifying on Saturday, September 20, before the six-hour sports car race goes green on Sunday, September 21, at 11:40 a.m. local time.
