Press release -

Sailing camp for future employees

This year, another 27 young people are offered to sail this summer, of which 4 will be in a week-long sailing camp on Æolusön. In addition, 10 young people will have opportunities for summer jobs. The aim is to get more young people interested in boating, shipping and the harbor.

- Last year's investment was extremely successful and we take it for granted to continue with this sponsorship and expand it so that more young people from Gårdsten can experience the sea, sailing, get a summer job and above all create networks with friends from other parts of the city. In the long term, this investment means that we also secure future skills and continue to increase the number of employees with a foreign background, completely in accordance with our mission, to reflect the diversity we have in Gothenburg, says Elvir Dzanic, CEO of the Port of Gothenburg AB.

Successful investment
During the 16 years of operation, more than 400 young people from Gårdsten have experienced sailing and fellowship. 45% are girls and 55% are boys. Today, Youth & Sailing is classified as one of the most successful integration projects in Gothenburg.

- Thanks to the fact that we receive this sponsorship from the Port of Gothenburg AB, we can continue the youth activities in collaboration. For the young, this means a lot, the younger ones have the opportunity for a summer activity and the older ones who work in the summer get an important reference on their CV for the future, says Salma Nazzal, head of Gårdstensbyrån at Gårdstensbostäder.

Future employers
The port's sponsorship investment means that 37 young people from development areas get to experience port and sailing life. In addition to sailing camps at GKSS in Långedrag and on Æolusön, several summer jobs are also offered as sailing instructors and harbor masters.

- Our hope is that the young people we invest in will open their eyes to us and keep us in mind as future employers and hopefully choose courses in shipping, logistics or other things related to the port, says Elvir Dzanic.

Background
Youth & Sailing is an established business that was started in the autumn of 2005 by the Rotary Club in Långedrag and Gårdstensbostäder AB, which together with GKSS (Gothenburg Royal Sailing Society) decided to start an activity focusing on youth in combination with sailing and boating. The target group would be young people in Gårdsten- a socio-economically challenged area in Gothenburg.

Purpose and goals of the activity:

• Prepare young people from Gårdsten, the opportunity to learn to sail and thereby get in touch with the archipelago, boating and not least with young people from other environments and areas.

• Expand the network of contacts for the young people concerned and thereby contribute to increased understanding and respect for cultural and social differences.

• Give the opportunity for interested and talented young people from Gårdsten to develop their sailing interest to become skilled racing sailors (elite sailors), sailing instructors or competition officials.

The sponsorship initiative from the Port of Gothenburg AB means another 37 places for young people who get to experience the sailing environment, get a summer job, and experience the sea and port life during a few summer weeks in 2022.

• 23 places for young people to go to sailing school

• 4 places for young people to go on a sailing camp to Æolusön

• 10 places for young people to have the opportunity to work for GKSS in the summer.

WHEN: weeks 25, 26 and 32, Mon 1-3 PM Tues-Fri 9 AM-3 PM
