From face tweakments to body contouring procedures, these are the rising aesthetic trends in 2021 according to Dr. Ivan Puah

Whether you care to admit or not, there’s no denying that non-surgical cosmetic procedures are becoming increasingly popular alongside traditional surgeries in this modern era.

While such treatments to improve one’s appearance aren’t new, there’s more research and development now to improve existing techniques and design new procedures to treat a wider variety of conditions and concerns.

Indeed, the world of aesthetic treatments is ever evolving and as they continue to infiltrate more beauty regimes, we can’t help but wonder: what exactly will 2021 bring?

To find out, we spoke with Dr. Ivan Puah, medical director and founder of Amaris. B Clinic. Keep on reading to learn about all the cosmetic predictions we’ve rounded up with the help of Dr. Ivan Puah.

AESTHETIC TRENDS IN 2021: TWEAKMENTS AND SURGICAL PROCEDURES DUE TO WFH

Many of us may have rejoiced at the idea of working from home at first, as we get to save time on travelling and getting dressed for work. That happiness soon dissipated as we’re now even more exposed to higher screen time and a worsened sedentary lifestyle.

There’s some good news, however, with available treatments and procedures that can help fix these WFH-related skin and body issues.

FACIAL ENHANCEMENTS FOR A BETTER-LOOKING COMPLEXION

As video calls continue to be the norm for those working from home, many of us have become more conscious of how we look on screen. According to Dr. Ivan Puah, this has led to the demand for skin and facial enhancements such as laser skin toning and face slimming.

With video meetings being a big part of our daily schedule ever since the pandemic, you would’ve noticed by now how unflattering the lighting on video calls can get.

Because of that, Dr. Ivan Puah says that he’s seen an increased demand from his clients for treatments that target acne, pigmentation, wrinkles, facial fat, and slackened skin, as well as eye rejuvenation therapies.

“Many people have become more conscious of how they look on video calls, which is possibly the reason why facial liposuction is a popular treatment at my practice as this treatment permanently reduces facial fat,” he shares.

“Not only that, it also can lift and tighten saggy jowls and define facial contour, which effectively makes one look not only slimmer, but also more rejuvenated. There’s also procedures like non-ablative Pico Fractional Laser that can effectively address various skin concerns such as pigmentation, skin tone, and acne,” he adds.

That said, Dr. Ivan Puah also pointed out that there are some who are looking to take a break from aesthetic treatments or don’t feel the need for these procedures as much, since their faces are covered by masks most of the time.

BODY SCULPTING TREATMENTS TO TACKLE THE EFFECTS OF SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE

While WFH life has taken the hassle of needing to dress up for work out of the equation, it has also introduced a new problem to our lives: many of us are noticing that our sedentary lifestyles have worsened significantly.

As a result, Dr. Ivan Puah foresees an uptick in surgical body sculpting treatments as well as weight management therapies this year.

“I am definitely seeing more clients lamenting about weight gain due to stress eating, binge-eating, overeating, reduced activity levels or fat accumulation in areas such as the thighs, abdomen, and arms in the past year,” he says.

“Post-Circuit Breaker, my team and I have also observed an uptick in permanent fat loss solutions among our clientele as they face difficulty losing fat despite working out a lot. All of these factors certainly propel more demand for surgical body sculpting treatments and weight management this 2021.”

A MORE HOLISTIC APPROACH TO MANAGE WFH SKIN AND BODY

In the past year, mask wear and WFH have become the buzzwords for the current generation. As we continue to battle with this pandemic, mask-wearing and working from home will also continue to be our new realities.

Combine them with increased screen time, late nights, high stress levels, and poor diet, you’ll inevitably face skin outbreak, more pronounced dark eye circles, weight and fat gain, poor sleep quality, and also accelerated ageing of the skin.

Dr. Ivan Puah expounds that doctors and medical professionals can offer treatments such as lasers, fillers, injectable neutoxins, non-surgical or surgical fat reduction, and weight management therapies to help manage the pandemic skin, face, and body. However, he stresses the importance of doing our part if we want to see any real visible results.

To yield noticeable results, we have to try our best to reduce screen time whenever we can, sleep early, and maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet. “Whatever treatments or procedures you sign up for aren’t miracle-workers, and they certainly can’t produce the results you want if you continue to lead an unhealthy lifestyle. It’s really a two-way street if you think about it,” he says.

AESTHETIC TRENDS IN 2021: DERMAL FILLER INJECTIONS FOR BETTER SKIN HEALTH

In this day and age, fewer people are interested in having work done on their faces only to end up looking like someone else rather than a better version of themselves.

That’s one of the reasons why dermal filler injections have been all the rage over the last few years, as it offers subtle tweaks to the face without giving too much away.

“With one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid, it helps boost and hydrate the skin while remodelling ageing and sagging tissues. Being such an all-rounder solution, I definitely think it will continue to be popular this year as well,” he says.

The rise of dermal fillers has also led to the prevalence of the ‘over-filled face’ syndrome, where you get unnatural appearances such as ‘pillow face’ due to excessive injectables in the face.

This 2021, Dr. Ivan Puah is confident that treating over-filled faces will likely continue to rise since reversing or correcting these complications are increasingly being sought by affected individuals.

That said, it doesn’t mean that evergreen procedures such as injectable neutoxins, and non-surgical nose enhancement are going to take a backseat this year, Dr. Ivan Puah says.

“Sure, it’s true that the overly dramatic appearance, high-arched brows, and almost-emotionless facial expression that come as a result of injecting injectable neurotoxins into the face are no longer appealing.

While it’s popular as an anti-wrinkle treatment, neurotoxin injection is also used for facial reshaping, pore reduction, and chin enhancement purposes, so there’s no reason for it to go on hiatus this 2021.

As for non-surgical nose enhancement, I’m seeing nose threads being more in demand than dermal fillers these days due to better results and risk profiles,” he explains.

AESTHETIC TRENDS IN 2021: FEEL-GOOD BODY TREATMENTS

If there’s any silver lining to the onset of the pandemic, it’s that it has also made some of us realise that we deserve to feel good about ourselves and our bodies. However, most of us aren’t sure of the ways to do so aesthetically.

For those with concerns over stubborn, difficult-to-improve fat bulges on areas such as the double chin, love handles, saddlebags, and tummy fat, Dr. Ivan Puah posits that Vaser Liposuction remains the most effective and comprehensive option.

“It is clinically known not only for its ability to remove more than 90% of localised excess subcutaneous fat in one surgical session but also to tighten loose skin and stimulate collagen production,” he explains.

“In short, Vaser Liposuction allows me to reduce unwanted fat layers without damaging surrounding tissues – and with minimal pain and downtime, by the way – to shape and enhance my patients’ bodies into the toned, sculpted physiques that they desire.”

AESTHETICS TREND 2021: BODY CONTOURING PROCEDURES FOR A MORE DEFINED FIGURE

Body contouring procedures aren’t new, but according to Dr. Ivan Puah, there’s been an increased demand for these treatments from relatively slim and fit clients in the past few years, particularly more so last year.

“At Amaris B. Clinic, we offer refined, high-definition body-sculpting solutions with MDC-Lipo Sculpt to this group of patients, in order to help them achieve a more defined shape or musculature that would otherwise be extremely difficult to attain on their own due to limitations in their genetics or lifestyle.

Using this proprietary approach, I can simultaneously remove stubborn localised fat thoroughly, sculpt and shape the body contour, creating more definition while keeping the scarring to a bare minimum,” he lets on.

AESTHETIC TRENDS IN 2021: FAT GRAFTING FOR HEAD-TO-TOE REJUVENATION

You may have heard of fat grafting as a means for a more natural breast augmentation but this time-enduring technique – the first fat grafting procedure actually dates back to 1893! – can actually be used for facial and hand rejuvenation as well as buttock augmentation as well!

“Since the 1990s, the surgical techniques of fat extraction and transfer have drastically improved. It is certainly a natural, safer, and longer-lasting option as we’re using an element from your own body to enhance the areas you wish to work on,” he explains.

“In fact, I’ve been practising facial and body fat grafting for more than 15 years and have used fat grafting to help my patients who are suffering from dark eye circles, facial volume loss, skin laxity due to ageing, and droopy breast, just to name a few,” he adds.

“Fat grafting is becoming increasingly popular in recent years due to improved results, efficacy as well as public awareness. In my opinion, it will cater not just to clients who are not into implants but also those who prefer naturally grafted tissues for enhancements in other body parts.”

AESTHETIC TRENDS IN 2021: GREATER RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FITNESS AND AESTHETICS

As health and fitness continue to play a big role globally, it’s no surprise that we’re seeing the #fitnotskinny trend taking over the world by storm, especially in 2020.

For Dr. Ivan Puah, exercise medicine and sports science are sure to play an even more crucial role in our lives as we continue to live in a new reality brought on by the pandemic.

“I’ve always been a firm believer that being healthy and fit is the basis for anti-ageing and looking beautiful. Pre-pandemic, we’ve already seen gyms and yoga studios sprouting in almost every nook and cranny of our island. During the COVID-19 lockdown, more people started to become even more conscious about health, weight, and fitness,” he says.

“Post-Circuit Breaker, we actually saw a surge in the number of people coming over to our practice to seek help for injury issues – there were also a good number of those who could not lose weight efficiently by themselves.

Injury prevention and recovery, exercise prescription for weight loss, and body improvement are some fitness therapies that I believe will be in demand this year, especially in my practice.”

AESTHETIC TRENDS IN 2021: HIGHER DEMAND FOR COSMETIC AND AESTHETIC TREATMENTS BY MEN

More and more men are open to the idea of cosmetic and aesthetic treatments to look and feel better, and Dr. Ivan Puah seems to agree with the increased number of male patients frequenting Amaris B. Clinic.

“This may be hard to believe, but recent statistics and researches have shown that cosmetic enhancements are less stigmatised in men. Many of the male patients who have come to my practice are looking to do treatments to build their self-confidence, virility, and competitive edge over their peers,” he shares.

“With this in mind, I personally think that men seeking cosmetic and aesthetics treatments should not be viewed as a fad anymore – it is a growing demand that will continue to stay in 2021 and beyond.

In my practice, apart from the non-surgical treatments such as injectable neutoxins, Ultherapy, and facial liposuction, the most in-demand procedures are liposculpting for a more defined bod and also gynecomastia surgery.

Often viewed as a cosmetic concern, gynecomastia is, in fact, a medical condition that affects men physically and psychologically as it not only causes pain and discomfort but also negatively impacts their self-esteem and confidence,” he lets on.

While it may have been a body image issue that gets swept under the rug in the past, Dr. Ivan Puah says that many men are now seeking solutions to fix this problem to regain their quality of life and confidence.
