The vehicles from the Volvo Museum are getting a new home

After almost 30 years in the Volvo Museum in Arendal, it is time for Volvo’s iconic vehicles to shine in their new home at World of Volvo. Gothenburg’s new experience centre will open on 14 April – and the vehicles are ready to welcome their first guests.

The most iconic vehicles that, until now, have been on display at the Volvo Museum are being moved to World of Volvo, ready for opening on Sunday 14 April.

“World of Volvo will offer an entirely new experience. Over the years, we have been welcoming some 100,000 visitors annually to the museum at Arendal and we are expecting that number to increase at the new location in the centre of Gothenburg where the vehicles will be accessible to more people,” says Ulrika Sandford, Marketing & Communications Manager at World of Volvo.

The selection of vehicles at World of Volvo will vary. Visitors can look forward to viewing the Volvo P1800, Volvo 240, Volvo Duett and other vehicles when the centre opens. Two of the trucks being exhibited are the Volvo Titan and the Volvo F88.

In addition to the vehicle treasures, other aspects of Volvo's proud heritage will be displayed in the exhibition, not the least relating to the Volvo founders Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson. Visitors will be able to learn more about the history of some of Volvo’s innovations, such as the three-point safety belt, which was launched in the Volvo Amazon and the Volvo PV 544.

“We are obviously extremely proud of the three-point safety belt, one of Volvo’s major safety innovations that has contributed greatly to making roads safer for everyone. In addition to enabling visitors to explore iconic gems and discover more about Volvo’s innovations and ambitions, World of Volvo offers a look into the future of mobility and transport,” says Magnus Wrahme, CEO of World of Volvo.

In addition to the exhibition, World of Volvo will be hosting cultural events, concerts and talks, with the capacity to accommodate up to 1,100 guests. It also offers facilities for conferences and events. World of Volvo opens its doors on 14 April 2024.

Some of the exhibition’s highlights:

Volvo P1800
Not just a sports car, but also a Guinness World Record Holder. In April 1966, the American high school teacher, Irv Gordon, from Long Island, New York bought a P1800 S. By 2013, Irv had driven his Volvo more than five million kilometres, thus setting a world record.

Volvo Titan
The Titan made its debut in 1951 and was to compete in the heaviest category of truck with a 9.6 litre aluminium alloy engine. In 1954, the Titan became the world’s first mass-produced truck with a turbo engine.

Volvo 240
The new Volvo 240 was unveiled in 1974. After testing and comparing cars in the same size category, the US traffic safety authority NHTSA declared that the 240 provided car occupants with the best protection and thereafter used the 240 as a benchmark for safety standards.

Volvo F88
In 1965, all trucks produced by Volvo were upgraded as part of the largest development programme hitherto undertaken. F88 became the foremost symbol for eight significant modifications that were collectively known as the “System 8”.

Volvo Duett
The Volvo Duett launched the tradition of Volvo as a maker of estate cars. The Duett came into being when Assar Gabrielsson decided that Volvo should build “its own multi-purpose vehicle”.
