Frederik Schandorff secures dominant IMSA victory at Indianapolis
Stellar performance from the Danish Ferrari driver, who together with Inception Racing claimed a class win in this year’s edition of the six-hour race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The ambitions were fulfilled for Frederik Schandorff, who on Sunday evening Danish time crossed the finish line first in the GTD class at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, securing Inception Racing’s first win of the 2025 IMSA season. A victory that certainly did not come easy, as the team was forced to make an extra pit stop late in the six-hour race to fit a new front hood on their Ferrari 296 GT3.
“It was a wild and crazy race, exactly as we had expected. More than 50 race cars packed onto a relatively short track created massive traffic, and combined with the close racing across the different classes, it was a matter of survival from the very start. The fact that we managed to win is absolutely fantastic – especially considering what happened along the way,” said Frederik Schandorff.
The Dane took over the car as the third and final driver after teammates Brendan Iribe and Oliver Millroy. The trio had already fought their way well up through the GTD field after starting from 15th on the grid – leaving it to Schandorff to bring the Ferrari home in first place.
With just over an hour remaining, however, the team was strongly challenged. An LMP2 car cut closely across in front of the Dane, and the sudden shift in aerodynamics caused heavy vibrations that shook the Ferrari’s front hood loose and sent it flying. The incident forced an extra pit stop – and suddenly the victory was in jeopardy.
“Fortunately, it also triggered a Full Course Yellow, which meant we didn’t lose too much time in the pits. We were back out in second place, but luckily for us the leading GTD car received a penalty, which put us back in front,” explained Schandorff.
“But the final hour was nerve-racking, as we weren’t sure if the new hood would hold. I had to take care of the car and stay out of slipstreams while still maintaining the lead. It was pretty intense, but it only made the victory even sweeter when we finally crossed the finish line.”
The triumph at Indianapolis Motor Speedway marked Inception Racing’s first win since switching from McLaren to Ferrari at the end of the 2024 season.
“Great that it finally worked out, and fantastic to show that we belong among the very best in the series. Huge thanks to the entire crew for an incredible effort. It was a tough one, but this time it paid off,” the Dane concluded.
Next up for Frederik Schandorff and the rest of the Inception Racing squad is the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship finale – the legendary Petit Le Mans – held at Road Atlanta on October 12.
