Picnic dreams in scenic Stockholm

In times like these when social distancing is key, a picnic in the open air feels better than ever. In Sweden we practice the right to roam, which gives us freedom to enjoy the nature. Find a basket to fill with goodies, bring friends or family and spread out a blanket in one of Stockholm's many green spaces and beaches or maybe even in one of our national parks and nature reserves.

If you are staying with us, we would be happy to help you fulfil your picnic wishes. Book a fully stocked picnic basket next time you visit us and get ready to lace your shoes and head out!

Here we have listed some of our favourites for the summer.

Djurgården
Just a short trip with the bus or tram helps you escape from the big city pulse to Royal Djurgåden. A visit here can easily fill your entire day! Stroll along the water or among lush trees, perhaps take a detour further into the oak forest or to one of the island's many attractions. Along the way, there are plenty of benches or soft grass areas to rest on.

Haga park
King Gustav III initiated this park with its characteristic English style in 1771. There’s enough space to find your own spot here although it’s immensely popular all year round. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel live with their family in the Haga Palace, but the castle’s surroundings are open to the public and offers countless of attractions and activities; fabulous natural areas as well as pavilions, beaches and the largest aquarium in the Nordic region, Fjärilshuset.

Skeppsholmen
Only a few minutes’ walk from the Grand Hôtel you will find this island that besides its historical narrative offers plenty of lovely green spaces with beautiful surrounding views of Södermalm, The Old Town, Djurgården and the glistening water.

Nacka nature reserve
Beyond the city’s boundaries, in the Stockholm County, there are nearly 330 nature reserves to discover. A twenty minutes bus ride from Slussen will take you to Nacka Nature Reserve. Here you can hike and bike through deep forests, peek into caves, paddle or take a swim in one of the many lakes. Our favorite pick in the reserve is Lake Sandasjön, not far from Hellasgården, known for its thousand-year-old spring. The sun-heated cliffs that surround the dark glittering water complete your picnic on a hot summer day. The famous trail Sörmlandsleden passes through here as well.

Archipelago
Are you looking for total privacy? With almost 30,000 islands, islets and skerries in the Stockholm archipelago, anything is possible. A rib boat tour helps you to access places otherwise unavailable, and if you are lucky you’ll see both seals and sea eagles. Contact our concierge if you would like to make a booking, we are happy to help.
