World of Volvo awarded the Swedish Architects Västra Götaland Architecture Prize 2025
World of Volvo has been named the winner of the Swedish Architects Västra Götaland Architecture Prize 2025. The building, designed by the architecture firm Henning Larsen on behalf of Volvo Cars and Volvo Group, receives the award for its strong architectural expression and its contribution to the urban environment of Gothenburg.
The prize consists of a diploma for both the architect and the client, as well as a bronze plaque to be mounted on the building. The award was presented at a ceremony at the Röhsska Museum on 2 October. The jury—comprising Christer Malmström (Malmström & Edström), Anna Sunnerö (Sunnerö Architects), and Björn Gross (Arctic Studio)—highlights World of Volvo as a project that convincingly unites contemporary architecture with sustainability, openness, and cultural experiences.
The jury’s motivation reads:
The building forms a shining lantern on Gothenburg’s horizon – a new landmark for the city and for western Sweden. Here, the everyday and the visionary meet in an architecture rooted in the power of trees and timber. A tectonic sculpture where nature, humanity, and machine converge.
“With World of Volvo, we wanted to create a building that not only represents two strong brands but also gives something back to the city and its inhabitants. It’s an honor to receive this award together with our architects,” says Paul Welander, board member of World of Volvo.
“For us, it has been a unique opportunity to design a meeting place where nature, technology, and culture interact. That the jury recognizes this means a lot,” says Martin Stenberg Ringnér of Henning Larsen.
World of Volvo opened in April 2024 and has since established itself as a new meeting place and destination in Gothenburg. The building is intended as an open gathering space for both residents and visitors from around the world, with a focus on sustainability, design, and experiences.
About the Prize
The Swedish Architects Västra Götaland Architecture Prize is awarded every two years to a building or group of buildings constructed within the association’s geographical area—the Västra Götaland region—and that represents exemplary architectural work. The prize aims, among other things, to stimulate discussion about architecture both within the profession and among the general public.
