Luca Magnussen wins McLaren Trophy Europe championship

The young Danish racing talent secured the first championship title of his career following a dramatic season finale at Portimão Circuit on Sunday. Just half a point decided the battle for the McLaren Trophy Europe crown.

Luca Magnussen is the 2026 McLaren Trophy Europe champion! The 17-year-old racing talent from Roskilde, Denmark, claimed the title following a thrilling season finale at Portimão Circuit in Portugal on Sunday. Together with his British Paddock Motorsport teammate Callum Davies, the young Dane celebrated his first championship victory – in his debut season in sports car racing.

However, the road to victory was anything but straightforward. Magnussen and Davies arrived in Portugal leading the championship and had the opportunity to secure the title in Saturday's opening race. Unfortunately, a pit stop outside the permitted time window cost them valuable positions, leaving the Danish-British pairing second in the championship standings ahead of Sunday's decisive finale.

Turning things around required an extraordinary effort. Magnussen was tasked with bringing the car home during the second half of the race, and when their main championship rival suddenly had to pit with technical problems, the opportunity to reclaim the lead in the standings presented itself.

But the drama was far from over. On the very last lap, Magnussen received a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits. This meant the Dane had to cross the finish line more than five seconds ahead of his nearest pursuer to secure the necessary points. With a margin of just 5.6 seconds, he managed exactly that, allowing Magnussen and Davies to celebrate the championship title – by a mere half a point!

“What a crazy ending to an absolutely wild weekend! After Saturday's race, where we lost a lot of points because of a silly mistake, I have to admit I didn't have much hope of winning the championship. But the way today's race unfolded just goes to show that anything really can happen in motorsport. I honestly struggled to believe it when I crossed the finish line,” says a relieved Luca Magnussen.

The championship victory also adds another chapter to a special family story. Luca's father, Jan Magnussen, made his Formula 1 debut with McLaren in 1995, while his older brother Kevin Magnussen also began his Formula 1 career with the British team in 2014. Now another member of the Magnussen family has achieved his own success with McLaren.

The championship is Luca's first, and it was secured in remarkable fashion. Magnussen and Davies did not win a single one of the season's ten races, but they claimed podium finishes at four of the five rounds and scored championship points in nine out of ten races. Consistency ultimately proved decisive in their title-winning campaign.

“I'm incredibly proud. This is my first season in a sports car, and before the season, the main expectation was simply to do well, while winning a championship was more of a dream. Now we're standing here with the big trophy as proof that hard work pays off. It's an absolutely amazing feeling,” says Luca Magnussen.

Throughout the season, the young talent has been supported by international meat producer SASHI Beef Lover and Danish cybersecurity company Admin By Request, along with several other partners who have helped make his McLaren Trophy Europe campaign possible.

“A huge thank you to my teammate Callum Davies and the entire team at Paddock Motorsport, who have done a fantastic job. And a special thanks to my sponsors and partners, who believed in me and made it possible for me to take this step in my career. I hope and believe this is the first of many championships,“ concludes Luca Magnussen.

With the 2026 McLaren Trophy Europe title secured, Luca Magnussen ends his first season in sports car racing on top, following his participation in the British GB4 single-seater championship last year. His ambition is now to continue developing towards a professional career in international sports car racing.
