National Fish & Chip Awards 2026 Launches with a Fresh Call for Entries and Public Nominations
Seafood from Norway is proud to once again serve as principal sponsor of the National Fish & Chip Awards, as the 2026 competition officially opens for entries. Now in its 38th year, the awards continue to honour the people and businesses who bring the UK’s most iconic dish to life.
Organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the awards are open to UK fish and chip operators, as well as international entrants. With a refreshed application process and 11 categories—including the new Menu Innovation Award—the 2026 edition promises to be the most inclusive and inspiring yet.
Andrew Crook, President of the NFFF, added:
“There’s a shared connection and unique rapport in the industry, and whenever we can celebrate and reinvigorate businesses, we will do so. At the request of the fish and chip community, we’ve revised the entry requirements, so we’re looking forward to receiving many more first-time entrants along with those who are trying again to rise to the top.
Ultimately, the awards are designed to inspire strategies that help businesses strengthen in all areas and achieve longevity.”
A Partnership Rooted in Quality and Sustainability
Victoria Braathen, UK Director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, spoke at the launch event in Darlington:
“As we proudly return as principal sponsor of the 2026 National Fish & Chip Awards, Seafood from Norway continues to honour the deep-rooted connection between our sustainably sourced seafood and this beloved national favourite.
This partnership is more than a sponsorship — it’s a celebration of the people and businesses who bring fish and chips to life with passion, care, and commitment to quality.
On behalf of the Norwegian seafood industry, we’re proud to support the next generation of talent and the hardworking operators who uphold this cherished tradition across the UK.”
Seafood from Norway’s involvement reflects the Norwegian seafood industry’s long-standing dedication to supplying the fish and chip sector with responsibly harvested whitefish from the cold, clear waters of Norway. The Awards collaboration programme this year has also included valuable initiatives such as the Inspiration Day and an immersive trip to Norway—offering the Award winners a deeper understanding of the people, processes, and provenance behind the seafood that powers the UK’s favourite dish.
Celebrating Success at Yarm Road
The 2026 awards were launched at the soon-to-open restaurant of Yarm Road, winner of the 2025 Takeaway of the Year. For Director-manager Will Burrell, the award has been nothing short of transformative. The recognition has boosted both business and morale, with the team rising to the challenge and thriving under pressure.
Burrell attributes much of their success to a simple philosophy:
“Perfect the basics. From sourcing the very best products and materials to delivering excellent customer service and fish frying, we’re committed to offering the ultimate fish and chip experience. We are sticking to what we know—traditional fish and chips.”
He encouraged others to take part:
“Just do it. Winning seemed impossible, but with the right mindset and drive, anyone can. Even if you don’t win, the feedback you receive is invaluable. It’s an amazing and rewarding process.”
Public Nominations Now Open
For the first time, the public can nominate their favourite fish & chip to enter the competition. Fish and chip fans can visit the fish and chip awards page before Monday 7 July to recommend a local favourite. All nominated businesses will be notified and encouraged to enter.
Looking Ahead
Shortlisted businesses will be announced from September, with the winners revealed at a ceremony in London in February 2026.
Seafood from Norway is honoured to continue supporting this vital industry and looks forward to celebrating the innovation, resilience, and excellence of fish and chip businesses across the UK and beyond.
